Eligibility FAQs

Who is eligible for life insurance or annuities from Navy Mutual?

Navy Mutual provides affordable life insurance and annuities to those who have served our nation. If you are an active duty, reserve, National Guard, or retired servicemember in any branch of the United States Sea Services, military, or uniformed services (including the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, Coast Guard, U.S. Public Health Service, U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and Merchant Marine; and attendees at an Armed Forces service academy, the Merchant Marine Academy, and ROTC cadets under contract), we’d be honored to serve you.

Our products are also available to honorably discharged veterans who reside in Arizona, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Maryland, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, or Virginia, as well as the spouses, children, and grandchildren of these servicemembers and veterans.

I am currently overseas. Can I apply for coverage?

If you are living outside the United States, you may still be eligible to apply for coverage in certain limited situations.

Generally, Navy Mutual can consider applications from individuals who are stationed overseas on active orders from a U.S. federal agency, such as the Department of Defense or the U.S. State Department, and who are residing on a U.S. military installation or in U.S. government-sponsored housing while abroad.

Because insurance laws and regulations vary by country, Navy Mutual is only able to offer coverage when we can issue and enforce the policy. Life insurance is a legal contract, and we want to ensure that we can stand behind the contract you purchase from us—from issue through the payment of benefits. In some international situations, legal or regulatory limitations may prevent us from doing so. If you are abroad for personal reasons or living overseas long term without qualifying orders, we may be unable to offer coverage at this time.

We remain deeply committed to serving those who serve. Supporting active duty military members and their families—wherever duty takes them—has been central to Navy Mutual’s mission for over 145 years. If you are unsure whether your situation qualifies, we encourage you to contact us. We’re always happy to review your circumstances and help determine your eligibility.

I am 100% disabled. Am I able to qualify for life insurance?

An individual’s ability to qualify for life insurance is not directly dependent on their disability status. If you are 100% disabled, you are not automatically disqualified from our products. We encourage you to reach out to a representative at 800-628-6011 for more information.

What does medical underwriting involve?

Medical underwriting involves a thorough review of your current medical status and your medical history. You will be asked to submit records of any medical conditions and undergo a short medical exam. This exam is free of charge and must be scheduled within 30 days of your life insurance application submission. The results of your medical review will determine your risk rating, which may affect premium pricing and your medical eligibility.
