Navy Mutual celebrated a historic milestone of 140 years on July 28, 2019, in Arlington, Virginia. Members from the Board of Directors and staff proudly dedicated our birthday celebration to all those who serve this nation!
Navy Mutual is a nonprofit — and the oldest federally recognized Veterans Services Organization (VSO) — dedicated to serving uniformed servicemembers and their families since 1879.
Navy Mutual’s founding dates to July 28, 1879, on a hot evening in the nation’s capital. Naval officers, including several classmates of Richard Breck, met in the old Navy Department building to organize a more formal, efficient way to “pass the hat” and provide for the widows and orphans of servicemembers.
They named it the Navy Mutual Aid Association.
In 1879, Navy Mutual was formed to protect the families of naval officers who could not get life insurance due to the hazards of their profession. And 140 years later, that mission remains just as vital as we continue to provide coverage for members of all five branches of the U.S. Military, the U.S. Public Health Service, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Navy Mutual serves its Members with commitment, competence, and character.
