Today, retired RDML Brian Luther, USN, and Navy Mutual’s former chief strategy officer assumes the role of president and chief executive officer of the company. Luther succeeds retired RADM Bruce Engelhardt, USN, who is retiring from Navy Mutual after serving as CEO for the past 15 years.
“Brian is an accomplished leader. He commanded a carrier-based aviation squadron that fought in the global war on terror in the Mideast. He commanded the big deck amphibious assault ship USS Tarawa with fleet marine forces on board, and he commanded and deployed the nuclear aircraft carrier USS GEORGE H W BUSH. He is known for exceptional leadership in each of his navy commands,” said Engelhardt. “In the two years he’s been with us at Navy Mutual, he has made meaningful decisions and a lasting positive impact. I am blessed to have such an accomplished successor and I know I will be leaving the association in good hands.”
“It is with great honor and humility that I step into the position of president and chief executive officer at Navy Mutual. While leadership may change, our mission remains the same: to serve current and former members of the uniformed services and their families. I will continue my service to Members and potential Members with the same dedication with which I’ve served as chief strategy officer for the past two years,” said Luther.
“Navy Mutual remains committed to helping you and your families throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and always. While our physical office in Arlington, Virginia is currently closed, our staff are working remotely to bring you peace of mind through life insurance, annuities, and veterans services. We are grateful to all our Members for their enduring trust.”
Prior to joining the Navy Mutual team two years ago, Luther served as a naval aviator in the U.S. Navy.
- At sea, his tours included operational squadrons Sea Control Squadrons (VS) 22 and 24, Carrier Air Wing SEVEN, and as the commanding officer of VS-24.
- After completing the Navy Nuclear Power Training program, he served as the Executive Officer of the USS Nimitz (CVN 68), Commanding Officer of the USS Tarawa (LHA-1) the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), and Commander of Carrier Strike Group 2/George H.W. Bush Strike Group.
- He also served multiple tours in the Pentagon on the Joint Staff, Navy Staff, and Navy Secretariat as an Action Officer, Financial Analyst, Congressional Liaison, Director of Operations and Plans (N31) and the Budget Officer for the Department of the Navy.
We look forward to continuing to serve you with honor and integrity. Thank you for being Navy Mutual Members.
