This checklist informs survivors of what actions need to be done when death of a friend or loved one occurs.

Burial Benefits for Veterans:

Your loved one's years of military service are highly valued by our country. Burial benefits are available to the family of a deceased veteran who passed away of a non-service related condition to make certain that they receive the final send-off they deserve.

Burial benefits available through the Department of Veterans Affairs

  • Burial Flag, Headstone and Grave Marker: Provided at no-cost for honorably discharged veterans.
  • Burial Allowance for Service-Related Death:  VA will pay up to $2,000 toward burial expenses for deaths on or after September 11, 2001.
  • Non-service related Burial Allowance: VA will pay up to $300 toward burial and funeral expenses, and a $300 plot-interment allowance for deaths on or after December 1, 2001.  The plot-interment allowance is $150 for deaths prior to December 1, 2001.  If the death happened while the veteran was in a VA hospital or under VA contracted nursing home care, some or all of the costs for transporting the deceased’s remains may be reimbursed.
  • Death Pension: Benefit payable to eligible dependents of a deceased wartime veteran, with specific income limitations.

Death on Active Duty:
For those who make the ultimate sacrifice while on active duty, the military has provided a number of benefits to help the survivors.
Here is a list of those benefits.
